Black moss pot
£20.00
Black Moss Pot is the absolute holy grail for a wild dip in the Lakes! Tucked away in the stunning Langstrath Valley near Borrowdale, it's a natural playground of crystal-clear, emerald-turquoise water locked between dramatic, high rocky cliffs.
It is practically tailor-made for a Wandering Women adventure—brilliant views, a lovely riverside ramble, and the ultimate reward of a refreshing plunge.
Here is exactly what the women can expect on the day, broken down into a quick, scannable guide:
The Walk There & Back
The Route: A gorgeous out-and-back walk starting from the tiny village of Stonethwaite. It’s roughly 4.3 miles (7 km) total and takes about 1.5 to 2 hours of actual walking time, plus whatever time we spend soaking up the vibes at the pool.
The Terrain: Mostly a gentle, level riverside track following the beck. It’s classified as easy-to-moderate, but it gets a bit rocky, uneven, and undulating underfoot, with a few marshy "boggy patches" depending on recent rain. Good walking boots or sturdy trainers are a must!
The Dip & The Vibe
The Pool: It's a deep, dramatic rocky gorge with a gushing waterfall at the top end. The water is incredibly clean, clear, and very refreshing (read: properly chilly, even in the height of summer!).
Getting In: While you'll often see thrill-seekers leaping off the 6-metre high ledges, the safest and most relaxing way for the group to enter is at the shallower tail end of the pool, where you can easily wade in and let your body acclimatize to the cold.
🎒 The Packing Checklist (What to tell the group)
To keep everyone comfortable, smiling, and warm, here is the quick "must-bring" snippet you can drop straight into the event description:
🍔 Pack a Proper Picnic: There are absolutely no shops or facilities once we leave the start point. Bring plenty of food, snacks, and a flask of something hot for after the swim.
💧 Hydration is Key: Bring plenty of water to keep you fueled on the trail.
👕 The 'Dry-Warm' Kit: Crucial! Pack a full change of warm clothes, a towel (or a changing robe if you have one), and a warm layers/beanie. Even on a warm day, you will feel the chill the minute you step out of that fresh fell water.
👟 Footwear: Sturdy walking boots for the trail, plus a pair of cheap water shoes or old trainers for scrambling over the slippery rocks into the water.
It's a magical, social spot with plenty of space along the banks to sit, natter, eat cake,

FAQ's
Wandering Women FAQs AKA: Things you might secretly want to ask 👀
Do I need to be super fit? Absolutely not. Most of our walks are more “chat and wander” than ultra marathon energy. We stop, breathe, snack, take photos and admire the view regularly.
What if I come alone? Loads of women do! Honestly, after 10 minutes you’ll usually feel like you accidentally joined a group of mates. No woman wanders alone 💚
What should I wear? Comfy clothes, sensible shoes/trainers/boots and always prepare for Britain to offer all four seasons in one afternoon 🌦️
Do I need fancy walking gear? Nope. If you’ve got feet and a vaguely weather-appropriate outfit, you’re already halfway there.
Should I bring food? These are usually full-day adventures, so please bring a packed lunch, snacks and enough water/drinks for the day 🥪🍎💧
There’s often a café stop somewhere along the way because Wandering Women runs partially on caffeine and little treats, but we can’t guarantee shops or places to buy food on every walk.
Top tip: emergency snacks can solve at least 73% of walking-related drama. Scientific? No. True? Absolutely.
What if I’m anxious? You are very welcome here. There’s no pressure to talk constantly, walk at the front, or “keep up” socially. Some people come for friendship, some for quiet company, some because life has been a bit much lately. All valid.
What about water dips / paddling / swimming? Sometimes members may choose to paddle, dip or swim during certain walks, but this is always completely optional.
Please don’t feel pressured to join in just because others are doing it. Listen to your own body, confidence and comfort levels. Water activities are done entirely at your own risk and are not organised, supervised or covered as part of the walk itself.
If you do fancy a paddle or dip, you may want to bring:• A towel• Swimsuit/cozzie• Dry clothes• Water shoes if you have them• A healthy respect for freezing British water temperatures 🥶
Cold water and open water can be unpredictable, so please make sensible decisions for yourself at all times.
What’s the vibe? Think less military hike, more fresh air therapy with accidental life coaching and occasional cake 🍰🌿
